Corten Steel vs Mild Steel for Outdoor Architectural Panels
Corten steel and mild steel can both be used to create outdoor architectural panels, but they are normally chosen for very different reasons. The right material depends on the visual intent, environment, maintenance expectations and finish required for the project.
Corten steel: the finish is the material
Corten is a weathering steel selected largely because its exposed surface is designed to develop a changing oxide patina. Instead of hiding the steel beneath paint, the surface becomes part of the architecture. The warm rust tones work particularly well with planting, timber, stone and concrete.
That changing surface is also why Corten needs thoughtful detailing. Water runoff, drainage, ventilation and the surrounding materials should be considered from the start.
Mild steel: more control over colour and finish
Mild steel is commonly used where the design calls for a painted or powdercoated finish. It provides a broad choice of colours and can be a good option when the project needs a consistent appearance rather than an evolving natural patina.
Unlike an exposed weathering-steel finish, mild steel generally relies on an applied protective coating for outdoor use. The coating system and maintenance requirements therefore become part of the specification.
Which one suits an architectural feature panel?
Choose Corten when the natural weathered surface is a deliberate part of the design.
Choose coated mild steel when a controlled colour or uniform finish is more important.
Review coastal, salt-heavy or persistently damp environments carefully before selecting weathering steel.
Consider runoff and adjacent pale materials when using Corten.
Treat fixing, support and drainage as part of the panel design rather than separate installation details.
Thickness changes the visual character
Material thickness influences far more than strength. A substantial plate creates deeper apertures, heavier shadow lines and a more sculptural edge. Corten Glass panels are typically made from 6 mm plate, which gives the steel enough visual mass to balance the coloured art glass fitted into the design.
Corten plus art glass
Combining weathering steel and glass creates a different result from a conventional laser-cut privacy screen. The steel develops a muted, earthy surface while the glass introduces saturated colour, texture and changing light. That contrast is central to the Corten Glass concept.
Custom materials are possible
Although Corten is the signature material, custom panels can also be developed in stainless steel, powdercoated steel or aluminium composite depending on the project. The material choice should support the architecture rather than being selected in isolation.
